Matt felt his breath seize in his chest as he stared at Lucia sitting at her desk in the classroom. He’d thought to deliver flowers to her at the school after talking with John and Lily last night – realizing she wouldn’t be able to run away or brush him off.

It would be a touch and go meeting, enough to plant the seed… and back away so she didn’t feel attacked, caged, or pressured.

One look at her changed all that.

He had never seen anyone so exquisite in his entire life. Sleek dark hair ran down her back and her creamy olive skin made him turn to mush. The moment those dark eyes turned to him, he completely forgot what he was going to say… and did an about face before he tripped on his tongue like some thirteen-year-old boy with his first crush.

Darting into the office for safety and to gather his thoughts, he dragged in several nervous breaths, before realizing he wasn’t alone.

“Can I help you?”

“I’m good.”

“Sir, this is a school – what can I help you with?” the woman said firmly, looking up from her desk.

“I have a delivery for Lucia Campbell,” he admitted.

“You can leave it on the counter, and we’ll get it to her.”

“Thanks.”

Matt hesitated.

“Is everything alright, sir?” the woman stared unwavering, and he realized she was blind.

“Yeah,” Matt admitted. “I was just thinking that Ms. Campbell must be a really nice person to have flowers delivered. It’s a large bouquet.”

“She’s the sweetest person I know,” the woman said, smiling softly. “What color is it?”

“Orange - for the season.”

“Perfect, Lucia loves fall colors and is big on holidays. I’m sure she will like it.”

“Okay. I’ll just leave this here,” he stammered nervously.

“Do you want to take it to her classroom?”

“No, I need a second – I mean – I’m just dropping it off,” Matt blurted out and then practically ran from the office, realizing he was going to make a fool of himself if he stood there much longer. He wanted to just stare at Lucia for hours on end and that would definitely creep her out…

Nope, stick with the original plan, he thought painfully, shoving open the front door to the school and heading back to the rental car.
